On December 1st, 2022, the University Teaching Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria hosted The Helping Babies Breathe Training (HBBT)for healthcare professionals. The training is a global initiative aimed at reducing neonatal mortality by providing healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills they need to effectively manage birth asphyxia, a leading cause of child death. The event was organized by 4 Breath 4 Life and The Healthy Children Consortium, which is a collective of physicians who are culled from the Nigerian Society of Neonatal Medicine, The Pediatric Association of Nigeria and an alliance of a group of Nigerian physicians in the diaspora. In a statement, The Lead Founder of 4 Breath 4 Life, Dr Olumide Oyefeso emphasized the importance of such training in reducing neonatal mortality rates in Nigeria and the need for more healthcare professionals to be trained on the latest techniques and technologies for managing birth asphyxia. The training was an opportunity for healthcare professionals in Ibadan, Nigeria to gain the necessary knowledge and skills to save the lives of newborns and reduce neonatal mortality rates in their respective hospitals.

The Heart 4 Nigeria, an event organized by 4 Breath 4 Life, to provide open heart surgeries for children whose parents could not afford the medical care they needed, took place on July 4th - 8th, 2022 at the University Teaching Hospital in Ibadan, Nigeria. The event was a partnership between 4 Breath 4 Life and Healing Little Hearts, a UK-based charity that provides life-saving heart surgeries for children born with heart defects. The surgeries were performed by volunteer doctors from Healing Little Hearts, who flew to Nigeria to provide their expertise and care. Lead Founder, 4 Breath 4 Life, Dr Olumide Oyefeso, said “My favorite moment in the trip is when i see a child happy and active after a successful surgery”.  During the intervention, a total of 8 surgeries were performed, giving hope and a chance at a healthy life to these children and their families. Team Lead, Healing Little Hearts, Dr. Muhammad Nassar, said “There have been lots of improvements than the last time. There's better organization and the partners involved are much more supportive”.   The partnership between 4 Breath 4 Life, Healing Little Hearts and The University Teaching Hospital, Ibadan, is an example of how organizations can come together to make a positive impact in the world. By providing medical care to those in need, they are helping to improve the lives of many and make a real difference in their communities.
  4 Breath 4 Life in partnership with The Healthy Children Consortium organised The Helping Babies Breathe Training aimed to better prepare healthcare professionals to deal with birth asphyxia and provide newborns a greater chance at life. The training was held from November 28th to November 31st, 2022 at the Signature Children Hospital, Lekki and Lagos University Teaching Hospital in Idi-Araba, Lagos, Nigeria. The Healthy Children Consortium, consists of The Nigerian Society of Neonatal Medicine (NISONM), The Pediatric Association of Nigeria (PAN), and The Nigerian Physicians in the America (NPA). The event was well attended by over 50 healthcare professionals from across Nigeria, who praised the training for being informative, hands-on and interactive. The attendees also appreciated the opportunity to learn from experienced healthcare professionals and experts in the field. Overall, the Helping Babies Breathe Training was a great success, providing healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills they need to save the lives of newborns and reduce neonatal mortality rates in Nigeria. The event was free of charge and open to all healthcare professionals working in the field of neonatal care. The organizers, 4 Breath 4 Life and The Healthy Children Consortium, plan to hold similar events in the future to continue to improve the care and survival of newborns in Nigeria.  4Breath4 Life Team, composed of Dr. Olumide Oyefeso, Dr. Oladiji Vaughan, Dr. Osamudimen Idahosa and others made its first mission visit to Nigeria in November, 2013 to train health care workers. The training was conducted in three geographic areas in the western part of Nigeria: Sagamu local government area; Ikenne local government area; Remo local government area and Sacred Heart Hospital Lantoro, Abeokuta. Group training sessions were conducted in the different areas. Different cadres of health care personnel were trained including Traditional Birth Attendants, Community Health Extension workers, Midwives, Nurses and Doctors. Many were also trained as Master Trainers and charged with the responsibility of training others. In Sagamu, the team trained 101 medical personnel. In attendance were 40 Community health extension workers actively involved in deliveries in the area. We were particularly glad to train 41 Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs). We also trained 10 Chief Nursing Officers and 6 Nursing Officers. 4 medical personnel from Remo local government were in attendance comprising one physician and 3 nurses. In fact the medical doctor from Remo indicated that he had completed the HBB training 4 months earlier. He indicated that he planned to train 16 midwives under his supervision but he had no equipment for this. We were able to donate training materials to him to get him started. 4 Breath 4 Life donated training materials including ambubags and facemasks for the use of all individuals trained. In Ikenne, we trained 43 medical personnel. In attendance were 25 Community health extension workers, 15 Chief Nursing Officers, 2 Midwives and a doctor. We impressed on the local government chairman the need for adequate support in order to further propagate the program. Sacred Heart Hospital, Lantoro, was established in 1895, about 117 years ago. It is the oldest existing medical hospital in Nigeria, established by Catholic Missionaries. The Sacred Heart Catholic Hospital Abeokuta is a Catholic missionary general hospital that caters for all peoples, especially the poor. It is a reputable center for the training of health care personnel. At this hospital, we trained 18 doctors and 2 midwives. This group of individuals was trained as Master Trainers and they have agreed to use the hospital as a center for the training of other health workers. The biggest challenge has been the difficulty in getting the full commitment as well as resources from the government to further advance the program. We raised money from board members and private individuals for the procurement of the needed equipment. We were particularly pleased to donate equipment to the individuals we trained. Our ambition is to ensure that all individuals trained have the equipment to use in order to seamlessly perform Neonatal Resuscitation in their areas of work. We remain optimistic that we will keep making strides as long as we persist. We will forever be motivated by the palpable enthusiasm shown by participants and the priceless opportunity to save countless lives. Members of 4 Breath 4 Life, a nongovernmental organization based in the US visited the commercial hub of West Africa, Lagos – South West Nigeria from May 22 – 24, 2017 to carry out free medical outreach. The 3 day event started with the training of about 100 local health care providers from different parts of Lagos on new methods of Helping Babies Breathe (HBB) on May 22, 2017. The Team was led by Dr. Olumide Oyefeso alongside Dr Donald Osarumwense. Members of the public were given an opportunity to check their eyes during the Free Eye Clinic which was held on the 23rd and 24th of May, 2017 at the Sheba Centre, Ikeja and Freedom Park in Lagos Island. A Team of Eye Care Specialists led by Dr Rajvinder Pabla and her Assistant, AJ Khroud led other opticians and optometrists to provide eye care support for residents of Ikeja and Lagos Island.       Members of 4 Breath 4 Life took out time from their intervention program in Benin City to pay a courtesy visit to the Executive Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki. The Team was warmly received by Mr Godwin Obaseki. The Team which was led by Dr. Olumide Oyefeso in his opening remarks said 4 Breath 4 Life is willing to roll out a full scale Helping Babies Breathe Training all over the state – with the support of the State Government. The Governor, on his part, welcomed the Team to Edo state, pledging his support for the Helping Babies Breathe Training.   The city of Benin came alive on May 21 through to 23rd as residents trooped out to attend 4B4L Free medical intervention program held at Bishop Kelly’s Pastoral Centre, Airport Road Benin. The program began with training of Local Health providers on new methods of helping babies breathe. Lead Founder, Dr. Richard Olumide Oyefeso, a Consultant Pediatrician in, Ontario, Canada took the trainees comprising of community health extension workers, nurses, doctors through new methods of helping babies breathe    The second day was a free eye check and dental clinic day where patients were examined and treated for simple eye infections. Benin residents came out in their hundreds and were attended to by seasoned eye care specialists led by Dr. Rajvinda Pabla of Regal Eye Care, Ontario, Canada.   The final day was a general medical clinic – attendants had a chance to interact with our team of family physicians.  |
